Homeopathic Remedies of Insomnia (2/2)

Homeopathy for insomnia

Here are some common remedies for acute sleeplessness or frequent waking:

  • Arsenicum Album – Sleeplessness from anxiety, restlessness or nervous exhaustion. May get out of bed and start pacing or cleaning your house. Tends to wake around midnight and can be awake until 3 a.m. You tend to feel better from warm wraps or baths.
  • Coffea Cruda – Yes, from the coffee bean. Coffea is a great remedy for sleeplessness when you cannot sleep from over excitement of the body or mind, nervousness or too much mental activity.
  • Kali Phosphoricum – mental exhaustion after long periods of stress or overexertion. Sleepy but cannot sleep from overwork and worry. Mental fatigue. Hypersensitive to stimuli. Chronic fatigue from lack of sleep.
  • Lachesis muta – Tends to be for passionate, intense, talkative people. Sleeplessness in night owls. Sleeplessness during hormonal changes. Sleeplessness from anger or dreams of anger. Person feels hot and is very uncomfortable in the heat.
  • Nux Vomica – Sleeplessness from a busy mind and mental stress. Often waking from thoughts between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. Nux Vomica types tend to push themselves to the max.
  • Stramonium – this is a great remedy for night terrors in children or adults when there is fear of the dark and fear of being alone. Child wakes screaming with eyes open, but is still in the sleep state.
  • Sulphur – Sleepless during menopause and hormonal changes. Frequent waking during the night. Waking between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. and cannot fall asleep again. Drowsy by day and wakeful at night. Worse from heat. Feet can feel burning hot during sleep so you must uncover them at night. Waking from night sweats.
  • Valeriana Officinalis – cannot calm the body or mind. Oversensitive to sounds and smells. Intense moodiness, nervousness and restlessness. Symptoms are worse during menstrual cycle or menopause. Wide awake until morning.

 Dosage Suggestions

These remedies are available at your local health food store in the vitamin section. I recommend a 30c or 30x potency.

1)      In an acute period of sleeplessness, match the symptoms carefully to the best homeopathic medicine you can find (use above list).

2)      For sleeplessness, take one pellet two hours before bedtime and another pellet one hour before bedtime.

3)      If no improvement within a week, try the next indicated remedy.

4)      If you are resting soundly, discontinue dosing. Only redose if symptoms reoccur.

5)      If no improvement, as always, contact your Homeopath or your Primary Health Care Provider.

More tips to support a good night’s rest: 

  • Avoid watching TV, eating and discussing emotional issues in bed.
  • Don’t use bright light in your bedroom.
  • Avoid caffeine and smoking.
  • Get a massage on your scalp
  • A light snack may be sleep-inducing, but a heavy meal too close to bedtime interferes with sleep. Stay away from protein and stick to carbohydrates or dairy products. Milk contains the amino acid L-tryptophan, which has been shown in research to help people go to sleep. So milk and cookies or crackers (without chocolate) may be useful and taste good as well.
  • Do not exercise vigorously just before bed.
  • Take a warm bath. This often helps.
  • Listen to light music. Actually, any soothing noise (played softly) in the background may help.
  • Sleep with your head facing north (magnetic) and feet facing south.
  • Do relaxation techniques like yoga and meditation.
